From the Navy to a diamond album
Burrell grew up in Oakland and served three years in the US Navy. He released his first album, Feel My Power, independently and then signed with Capitol Records.
His third album, Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ’Em, made him one of the biggest stars of the early 1990s. The baggy trousers he wore on stage became known as Hammer pants. His popularity faded by the middle of the decade, and a highly publicised bankruptcy began in 1996. Later Hammer became a preacher and hosted a Christian programme on TBN.
