Muslim Magomayev was a baritone from Baku, an opera and pop singer and composer, People’s Artist of the USSR from 1973. He was the first to sing many of Arno Babajanian’s songs, including “Svadba” (The Wedding).

A baritone for Babajanian
Magomayev sang both opera and pop and was known across the former USSR, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. He became People’s Artist of the USSR in 1973.
He had a long creative partnership with Arno Babajanian. The composer recalled that he and Robert Rozhdestvensky first wrote “Svadba” as a satirical number for a music-hall show. Magomayev heard it and said the song had to be bright and festive, so they reworked it. Babajanian called the singer a full co-author.
