October 1985. West Germany. The trio Silent Circle releases "Touch in the Night" - a single that within four weeks enters the German chart at #15 and stays for 14 weeks. Silent Circle, a German band balancing between Italo Disco and Eurodisco, was a project where live musicians played what in Italy was done by producers. The lineup: Martin Tychsen (vocals, aka Jo Jo Tyson), Axel Breitung (keyboards, composer), Jürgen Behrens (drums, aka CC Behrens). Producers - Bernd Dietrich and Engelbert Simons, label Blow Up (Intercord).
Lineup and beginnings
Silent Circle first played together in 1979 - Breitung and Tychsen met at a young talent competition in northern Germany. They broke up early, regrouped in the early 80s. The debut single "Hide Away - Man Is Comin'!" came out in 1985. It was followed by "Touch in the Night" - the single that became the band's signature. Vocals by Martin Tychsen, melody and arrangement by Axel Breitung, production by Bernd Dietrich and Engelbert Simons.
"Touch in the Night" is classic Eurodisco: synth bass on eighths, a drum machine, an arpeggiator, romantic vocals. The band's style sits at the intersection of Italo Disco and Eurodisco. But Silent Circle is a German project, recorded at Rainbow studio in Munich, not in Milanese studios. This matters: half of the "Italian" hits of the 80s were recorded in West Germany.

The German market was primary for Silent Circle. According to offiziellecharts.de:

The debut album No. 1 was released in 1986 on Blow Up (Intercord) - Germany #58, Switzerland #28. Eleven tracks, 39 minutes. Producers - the same Dietrich and Simons. The album did not go platinum but cemented the band in German discotheque rotation.
What the band played
Silent Circle was not a studio fiction like many Italo projects. Breitung played synthesizers live, Behrens played drums. But for public performances Breitung was replaced by Harald Shaefer - Axel focused on writing and production. Detail: the single "Touch in the Night" was released in October 1985 as a 7-inch (3:43) and a 12-inch maxi (Crash Version, 5:29). The 12-inch version is the one DJs played: a long arpeggiator intro, an instrumental break at the three-minute mark.

Popularity in Russia
Silent Circle in Russia is not "one hit" but part of the soundtrack of a generation. "Touch in the Night" was played on cassette tapes, at school discos, on radio's "Eurochart" programmes. In the 2010s the band performed in Russia: at retro festivals and nostalgia tours. For the Russian listener, Silent Circle is a symbol of the era, alongside Modern Talking, Bad Boys Blue and Fancy. German Eurodisco that in West Germany was one of dozens of projects became a mass memory in the Soviet Union and post-Soviet Russia.
Later years
In 1987 the band moved to Teldec and released "Danger Danger" and "Oh, Don't Lose Your Heart Tonight." By 1990 a second album with ten tracks appeared. In 1993 - a Best of Silent Circle compilation with remixes. In 1994 - the album Back! with twelve new songs. In 1998 - Stories 'bout Love. "Touch in the Night" survived all reissues and remains the only track the band is known for outside Germany. But one track that spent 14 weeks in the German chart - that is enough.
