Modern Talking - Dieter Bohlen and Thomas Anders 1986, Cheri Cheri Lady video stylisation

September 1985, Hamburg: German duo Modern Talking - Dieter Bohlen (composer, producer, backing vocals) and Thomas Anders (main vocalist) - releases on Hansa Records the single “Cheri Cheri Lady”. In the German chart - #1, where it stayed for 4 weeks. In Switzerland - #1, 5 weeks. In the Netherlands - #1, 3 weeks. Austria - #1, 6 weeks. This is Modern Talking's third consecutive hit at German #1 - after “You're My Heart, You're My Soul” (March 1985) and “You Can Win If You Want” (June 1985).

Bohlen's formula

By September 1985 Dieter Bohlen had understood how the Modern Talking formula worked and was systematically repeating it. All three early hits are built on the same scheme: minor verse (A minor or D minor), major chorus with choral backing (Am-F-C-G, the classic italo-disco progression), BPM 118-122, length precisely 3:30 for radio rotation.

“I understood the formula of the hit by March 1985. After that my work reduced to one thing: not breaking the formula but polishing it. "Cheri Cheri Lady" is "You're My Heart" in different clothes”, Dieter Bohlen wrote in his autobiography Nichts als die Wahrheit (2002).

Recording took place at Rüssl Studio in Hamburg, August 1985. Bohlen was the sole producer and performer of all instrumental parts. Anders's vocal was tracked in one day, Bohlen's backing vocals - another half day. Total recording - 5 days. Budget - 18,000 Deutschmarks, a quarter of what Horn/ZTT spent on “Relax” the same months.

Instrumentation

  • Roland Jupiter-8 - pads and bass
  • Yamaha DX7 - electric piano (E.PIANO 1) and lead
  • LinnDrum - drum machine
  • Roland TR-808 - additional percussion (clap)
  • Oberheim DMX - rimshot

The characteristic “choral” backing vocal is Bohlen himself, recording his part in 8 takes with different intonations, then mixed into a single polyphony. This technique became Modern Talking's signature - imitating a vocal ensemble through multi-layer duplication by a single person.

Numbers

  • Germany: #1, 4 weeks (October 1985); 750,000 copies
  • Switzerland: #1, 5 weeks
  • Austria: #1, 6 weeks
  • Netherlands: #1, 3 weeks
  • Denmark: #1, 2 weeks
  • Norway: #2
  • France: #14
  • Sweden: #8
  • Italy: #12 - unusual for a German release
  • USSR/Russia: no official sales (Modern Talking didn't have rights for the Soviet market in 1985), but cassette copies circulated in quantities of over 10 million by 1990

Total single sales of “Cheri Cheri Lady” - 4 million copies globally. For comparison, “You're My Heart, You're My Soul” (Modern Talking's first hit) sold 8 million - but the second record didn't lose quality, despite the formula's repetition.

Why it worked so well in Eastern Europe

Modern Talking became the most popular Western artist in the USSR of 1986-1990. Several reasons. First - simple English lyrics, understandable without translation (school-level English). Second - melodies based on minor harmony, familiar to Russian ears (from Tchaikovsky to Antonov). Third - absence of political subtext, allowing the record to circulate under censorship.

By 1988 “Cheri Cheri Lady” was one of the most recognisable “Western” songs in Soviet student dormitories. That recognition survived the Soviet collapse - in 2020s Russia the track remains a classic. Related breakdowns of German hits - Bad Boys Blue, “Forever Young” Alphaville, “99 Luftballons” Nena.

What Modern Talking gave the genre

Modern Talking is one of the first cases where a producer fully structured a hit as a production formula. Bohlen showed that European pop didn't have to improvise - it could work like an assembly line. Two years later this model was developed by Stock/Aitken/Waterman (producers of Kylie Minogue, Rick Astley, Dead or Alive), five years later by Max Martin (Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys).

By 2024 Spotify - over 430 million streams of “Cheri Cheri Lady”. In 2023 the track appeared in the German series Deutschland 89 as a sound marker of the era. The duo still performs, despite the 2003 public conflict between Bohlen and Anders.
