1980: Roger Linn releases the LM-1 - the first drum machine with samples of real drums. That same year, Roland introduces the TR-808 - a drum machine with analog synthesis of every sound. Two devices, two philosophies: one plays recorded sounds, the other generates them from scratch. Sampler and drum machine - terms that were often confused in the 80s because the boundary between them was fluid. A breakdown using concrete instruments - LM-1, Emulator II, Akai S900 and MPC - shows where it actually lies.

Drum machine: sound generated inside

A drum machine is a device that synthesises or plays back percussive sounds to create rhythmic patterns. Two approaches existed in parallel from 1980. Analog synthesis: each sound is the result of an oscillator, filter and envelope. So worked the Roland TR-808 (1980-1983): kick - sine wave with envelope drop, snare - noise and tone mix, hi-hat - filtered noise. The TR-808 did not imitate real drums - it created “ideal” electronic versions. The development team under Tadao Kikumoto set out to build a “drum synthesizer”, not an imitator of real sounds.

Sample-based approach: each sound is a short digital recording of a real hit. The Linn LM-1 (1980) - the first drum machine with samples. Kick, snare and tom sounds were recorded from real drums, and the musician programs a pattern by placing these samples across steps. The LM-1 cost about $5,000 - more than the TR-808, which launched at $1,195.

Key distinction within the “drum machine” category: the 808 creates sound from scratch, the LM-1 plays back a recorded sound. But both are drum machines because their task is to generate a rhythmic pattern, not to record and play any external sound.

The LM-1 was used by Prince, Michael Jackson (on “Thriller”), Gary Numan and The Human League. The TR-808 became the foundation of hip-hop, techno and house - but in Italo Disco it was used less often, with producers preferring the LinnDrum (successor to the LM-1) for its more “real” drum sound. The difference: the 808 kick is a pure sine wave, recognizable in the first beats of Africa Bambaataa's “Planet Rock”. The LM-1 kick is a sample of a real hit, audible in Savage's “Don't Cry Tonight” (1983) and most Italo tracks of 1983-1985.

Sampler: any sound at the press of a key

A sampler is a device that records, stores and plays back digital audio samples. The first commercial sampler - the Fairlight CMI (1979), developed in Australia. Fairlight coined the term “sampling” in a musical context. The machine cost about $25,000 and included two CRT monitors, a keyboard and a light pen. In six years, Fairlight rewrote studio production more profoundly than all synthesizers of the previous decade.

Fairlight CMI is not a drum machine. It did not program rhythmic patterns as its primary function. Its task - to record a sound (voice, orchestra, drum, street noise) and assign it to a key. The musician plays samples like on a synthesizer: press a key - the recorded sound plays, transposed to the desired pitch. Fairlight was a sampler, sequencer and workstation simultaneously, but its core is sampling, not rhythm generation.

E-mu Emulator II: a sampler for mid-range studios

The E-mu Emulator II (1984) - a sampler that made the technology accessible. Eight voices of polyphony, 8-bit resolution, sound library on floppy disks. The Emulator II let you record your own sound and assign it to the keyboard, like a Fairlight, but cost $8,000 versus $25,000. Unlike a drum machine, the Emulator II had no built-in sequencer for rhythm programming - it played sounds via MIDI commands from an external controller.

The distinction: the LM-1 drum machine contains a fixed set of drum samples recorded at the factory. The Emulator II sampler lets you load any sounds from a floppy disk or record them with a microphone. A drum machine is a specialised tool for rhythm. A sampler is a universal tool for any sound.

The Emulator II was used by Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, New Order and dozens of synth-pop groups. In Italo Disco, the sampler was used sparingly - for vocal phrases, special effects and breaks, but the rhythmic foundation still came from a drum machine. Division of labour: the drum machine holds the rhythm, the sampler adds texture. This model persisted until the MPC arrived, combining both functions.

Akai S900: the 12-bit revolution of 1986

The Akai S900 (1986) - a rack-mount sampler with 12-bit resolution and sampling rates up to 40 kHz. Eight voices of polyphony, up to 32 seconds of sample memory. The S900 became a standard in late-80s dance music studios: enough quality for club playback, enough memory for drum loops and vocal phrases.

The S900 is not a drum machine. It has no buttons for pattern programming, no rhythm sequencer. It is controlled via MIDI from an external drum machine, sequencer or MIDI keyboard. But it was the S900 that let producers sample drum loops from records and rearrange them - the practice that defined hip-hop and house. Public Enemy, Eric B & Rakim and Bomb the Bass built tracks on samples recorded into the S900 and its successor, the S950.

Detail: the S900 had 12-bit resolution versus the Emulator II's 8-bit. A 4-bit difference meant 4,096 quantisation levels instead of 256 - cleaner sound, but the same logic: record and play, not generate.

MPC: when a sampler became a drum machine

The Akai MPC (Music Production Center), starting with the MPC60 (1988), combined a sampler and drum machine in one chassis. Pad controllers (16 rubber pads) let you play samples by hand, like a drum machine, while the built-in sequencer programmed patterns. The MPC60 was designed by Roger Linn - the same man who created the LM-1. The circle closed: the man who invented the sample-based drum machine built the instrument that made a sampler into a drum machine.

The MPC60 (1988) had 16-bit resolution, 13 seconds of sample memory per bank and 16 pads. Linn designed the interface so a drummer could play samples by hand - not program in a grid, but hit rubber pads like an electronic drum kit. This returns us to the question: drum machine or sampler? The MPC60 is a sampler you can play like a drum machine. Or a drum machine that stores any sound like a sampler. The answer depends on what you consider defining - interface or architecture.

Practice: who used what

In Italo Disco of 1983-1986, the standard studio setup looked like this: LinnDrum or Roland TR-808 on rhythm, Roland Jupiter-8 or Prophet-5 on melody, bass on Moog or Roland TB-303. Samplers like the Emulator II appeared sparingly - for vocal phrases and effects, but did not replace the drum machine. This explains why Italo Disco sounds “warmer” than hip-hop of the same period: the rhythm comes from a sample-based drum machine with real drum sounds, not analog synthesis.

In hip-hop of 1986-1990, the scheme was different: the Akai S900 sampled drum loops from 70s funk records, and the MPC60 (from 1988) allowed rearranging them and building new beats. The difference in approach: Italo Disco programmed rhythm on a drum machine, hip-hop sampled rhythm from other people's records. The result - a different sound: Italo Disco sounds “mechanical” in a good way, hip-hop sounds “groovy”.

In synth-pop and new wave, samplers were used more broadly: Depeche Mode built entire tracks on Emulator II samples, New Order combined drum machines with samples, Pet Shop Boys worked with the Fairlight. Here the sampler became not an addition but the basis of production - a transition that Italo Disco did not fully make until the late 80s, when the Akai S900 began penetrating Milanese and Munich studios.

Why the confusion persists

Modern DAWs include both drum machines (drum samples + sequencer) and samplers (loading any sounds) and MPC-style interfaces (pads + sequencer + samples). The boundary that was hardware in the 80s became conceptual in software. But the original distinction holds: a drum machine starts with rhythm, a sampler starts with recorded sound. The query “drum machine sampler” reflects this blending - looking for a device that both programs rhythm and plays external sounds. In the USSR, no such device existed: Soviet rhythm machines were analog, and samplers were not produced in the USSR.

Understanding that the 808 generates sound while the Emulator II records it remains foundational: without this distinction, you cannot understand why a track on a TR-808 sounds different from a track on an LM-1, even if the pattern is the same. The 808 gives a synthetic, “electronic” drum that does not exist in nature. The LM-1 gives a recording of a real hit that you can recognize but cannot change timbrally. The Emulator II and S900 let you record anything - from a voice to street noise - and make it sound in rhythm. The MPC combines the latter with the interface of the former. Four instruments, four relationships between sound and rhythm - and all four continue to live in DAWs twenty years later.
