Roland released the TR-808 in 1980 with an entirely analogue set of percussion voices. Within a few years, studios could choose between synthesis, short digital recordings of real drums and machines that combined both. Drum-machine sound is therefore better explained through four questions than through labels such as warm or cold: where does the source signal come from, how does it decay, which controls are available, and what processing follows it?

The same sixteen-step beat will not sound identical on a TR-808, LinnDrum and Oberheim DMX. The 808 creates its kick, snare, clap and hi-hat with electronic circuits. Linn and Oberheim machines play digital recordings of acoustic hits. The TR-909 uses analogue drums alongside sampled cymbals. Recognition begins with attack and envelope, not the badge on the front panel.

Three ways a drum machine can make a sound

Analogue synthesis does not play a stored audio file. A trigger starts a tone or noise generator, filtering and an envelope at the selected step. Every voice in the original TR-808 follows that broad principle. Roland's engineers describe its bass drum as a sweeping sine wave whose pitch changes after the hit. Tone and decay controls alter its spectrum and tail.

Digital sampling stores a short recording of a real drum in memory. The Linn LM-1, LinnDrum and Oberheim DMX brought the attack of an acoustic performance into a programmed sequence. That does not mean “one file with no control.” The DMX manual provides tuning for several voices, and replaceable sound memory could supply a different set. The accurate distinction is a fixed recorded source played with the changes that a particular machine permits.

Hybrid generation combines the two. On the TR-909, the kick, snare and toms are analogue while the hi-hats and cymbals are digital recordings. Roland chose samples for the metal instruments to give them a more realistic edge while retaining extensive control over the synthesised drums. One box therefore joins an electronic foundation to a clearly defined top end.

Kick: attack, fundamental tone and decay

The recognisable 808 kick begins with a brief transient and settles into a low, decaying tone. Extending decay does not turn it into a different instrument, but it lets the low end occupy enough time to behave almost like a bass note in a sparse arrangement. Tone changes the relationship between the initial click and the body. These documented controls matter more than folklore about one mandatory frequency.

A sampled LinnDrum or DMX kick often reveals more of the beater, membrane and room captured in the original recording. Yet it is misleading to contrast a “finite file” with “infinite analogue.” A synthesised voice is also bounded by an envelope, while a sample may be retuned and processed. The practical difference lies in the transient and in the way the timbre responds when pitch or decay changes.

Level-match before comparing. A louder kick nearly always seems fuller. Then shorten the tails, bypass compression and listen to the first 100-200 milliseconds. This separates source character from mastering. The history of the analogue approach continues in our feature on the Roland TR-808.

Snare and clap: do not confuse the instrument with the effect

The 808 snare combines a pitched body with a noise component. Tone and snappy controls adjust their balance before any equaliser is inserted. LinnDrum and DMX snares make the acoustic attack of a recorded drum more explicit. Neither is inherently superior. A synthetic snare can leave useful space in a dense arrangement; a sample can establish the impression of a live kit immediately.

The 808 clap is a separate synthetic voice made from closely spaced bursts of noise followed by a decaying section. It can be recognisable without any melody. The huge snare in “In the Air Tonight,” however, is not evidence for the character of a specific drum machine. Its famous scale is a recording and gated-reverb story. The source hit and the processing chain belong to different levels of the explanation.

Test them in order: dry hit, room or plate, gate, then compression. A different sequence changes the result because reverb can blur the transient and compression can raise the tail. Our Lexicon reverb guide examines the spatial half of the sound.

Hi-hat and cymbal: where analogue meets PCM

The upper percussion makes technology easy to hear. The TR-808 synthesises both hi-hat and cymbal with analogue circuits. Their deliberately electronic spectrum does not try to imitate one particular metal disc convincingly. The TR-909 retained analogue drums but used digital recordings for hi-hat and cymbal. The result joins a sharper top end to a familiar synthetic foundation.

On the LinnDrum and DMX, a closed hi-hat behaves as a short recording with a distinct attack. In a sixteenth-note line, a small change of accent can matter more than an expensive effect. Asking which sounds a drum machine needs should therefore begin with velocity or accent, tuning and decay rather than the advertised number of kits.

A listening test that does not rely on brand guessing

  • Pass one: solo kick and snare, remove effects and level-match by ear.
  • Pass two: use one pattern, one tempo and identical hit positions.
  • Pass three: change an available parameter such as decay, tone or tuning.
  • Pass four: return the same rhythm to a full mix and judge its function.

Do not identify a model from a single MP3 when pitch, distortion and effects are unknown. A heavily processed DMX may resemble a dry LinnDrum more than another DMX. “This transient suggests a sample and the tail has been shortened” is a defensible observation; “this must be a 1982 unit” usually is not.

Choose a sound for a musical role

Start with function. A synthesised kick with adjustable decay works for a long club low end, but its tail must coexist with the bass. A short sampled kick can give a pop beat a firm, readable attack. Choose a snare alongside the vocal: a broad noise tail may occupy consonant frequencies, while a dry recorded hit leaves more room for reverb.

Do not load ten nearly identical hits. Select one kick, one snare and closed and open hats, then build eight bars. Context beats catalogue size. If the kick disappears, shorten the bass note or separate their accents before adding five decibels. If the hi-hat is tiring, change velocity and gaps before reaching for an equaliser.

Four exercises for a useful sound library

First, make columns for source, attack, body and tail. Describe eight kicks from one folder without calling them good or bad. A source may be an analogue model or an acoustic recording; attack may click or remain soft; the body may be tonal or noisy; the tail may be brief or extended. Selection becomes intentional once those properties are visible.

Second, test tuning. Place one hit on every quarter note and move pitch in small steps while listening to the transient as well as the fundamental. A transposed sample may become longer and darker; a synthesised model can respond differently. Save three useful settings rather than twenty nearly identical files.

Third, compare decay against a bass line. Record four bars each with short, medium and long kick tails and change nothing else. If the long version obscures bass-note changes, shorten the envelope or edit the part. Sidechain compression should not be the only available answer.

Finally, export four level-matched hits as A-D and describe source, attack, body and tail without looking at brands. Reveal them afterwards. The aim is not to identify a model from one strike; it is to test whether an audible description agrees with the technical source.

Keep a dry demo pattern for every library and test it in mono. A wide clap or stereo room may lose attack when channels sum. When layering kicks, compare each source, their combination and inverted polarity at matched level. A second layer should add a named function-attack, body or tail-or be removed.

A drum machine's identity emerges where source, controls and pattern meet. The TR-808 is not recognisable because “analogue is always warmer,” but because particular circuits, useful controls and a sixteen-step workflow became a stable musical language. LinnDrum and DMX supplied another vocabulary: acoustic hits arranged with machine precision. The TR-909 demonstrated that both languages could live in one instrument.
