In 1982 MIDI became a standard, and the world of electronic music stopped being a collection of solitary devices. Before that, a synthesizer and a drum machine could share a studio but not talk to each other. After MIDI they became a single orchestra: the sequencer supplied the notes, the drum machine handled the rhythm, and the synthesizers covered melody, bass and pads. This combination defined the sound of the 1980s and still underpins Italo Disco, synth-pop, house and techno.
What a synthesizer means here
A synthesizer is an electronic instrument that generates audio signals. Unlike a piano or a guitar, it does not make sound mechanically: inside, oscillators, filters, envelopes and LFOs do the work. In the 1970s the Minimoog (1970) and ARP Odyssey appeared as monophonic synthesizers for bass and leads. In 1978 the Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 added patch memory: sounds could be saved and recalled. In 1983 the Yamaha DX7 made digital synthesis mass-market; its E PIANO 1 preset appears on countless pop hits.
For dance music three types of synthesizer matter: polyphonic (pads, strings, chords), monophonic (bass, leads) and workstations (sequencer plus sounds in one box, such as the Korg M1, 1988). The more varied synthesizers in a studio, the richer the arrangement.

A short history in dates

What a drum machine is
A drum machine is an electronic instrument that plays drum sounds. Early 1960s models offered preset patterns - bossa nova, waltz, foxtrot. The turning point was the Roland CR-78 (1978), the first machine on which users could write, save and replay their own rhythms. Then in 1980 came the Roland TR-808, and in 1982 the LinnDrum.
The TR-808 generated sounds with analog synthesis, not samples. Its bass drum was built from a sine oscillator, a filter and a VCA; the decay control let the hit stretch into a bass note. This "unnaturalness" put many producers off at first, but it is exactly what made the 808 iconic in hip-hop, electro and techno. The LinnDrum, by contrast, used 8-bit samples of real drums and became a staple of pop music: Michael Jackson, Prince, Stock Aitken Waterman.
In 1983 Roland replaced the 808 with the TR-909 - the company's first machine to use samples (hi-hats, cymbals) alongside an analog kick and snare. The 909 became the foundation of house and techno in Chicago and Detroit.
How they connect
The crucial question is synchronisation. Before MIDI, CV/gate (control voltage plus gate) was used: an analog signal carried pitch, and a gate pulse carried the moment of key press. But CV/gate did not carry tempo, and every manufacturer used different connectors. So Roland developed DIN Sync: 24 pulses per quarter note, letting the drum machine and sequencer run at the same tempo.
MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), introduced in 1982-1983, replaced all of this with a single digital protocol. One cable carries note on/off (which note is playing), velocity (how hard), pitch bend, modulation, clock (tempo), start/stop. Now a synthesizer could control a drum machine, a sequencer could control a synthesizer, and a computer could control everything at once.
A typical 1980s setup looked like this: Roland TR-808/909 as master clock, Roland MC-4/MC-8 or Yamaha QX1 as sequencer, Roland Juno/Jupiter and Yamaha DX7 as synthesizers. Everything was linked by MIDI cables and fed into a mixer.
Why it changed music
Before MIDI, recording an electronic track required hours in a tape studio or live performance. After MIDI, one person could compose, program and record a dance track in a home studio. This lowered the barrier to entry and created the bedroom producer.
For Italo Disco this was critical: Italian producers such as Giancarlo Meo or Claudio Simonetti could make songs on a minimal budget, using a couple of synthesizers, a drum machine and a vocalist. For house and techno in Chicago and Detroit, MIDI plus cheap second-hand 808s and 909s allowed whole scenes to grow without major-label support.
The economics are key: one good synthesizer cost as much as a car, but a drum machine and sequencer were more affordable. MIDI let you buy one expensive keyboard and control it from a cheap sequencer. This produced the typical 1980s Italian production model: a small studio in Milan or Bologna, a couple of Rolands and Yamahas, and a vocalist booked for two hours. The model was so efficient that ZYX Music could release dozens of singles a month.
How the rhythm section works in combination
The drum machine is responsible not only for hits but for the groove. On the 808 the kick could be tuned to sound like a sub-bass. Snare and hi-hats set the rhythmic grid. Clap and cowbell added accents. Italo Disco often used the simplest kick-snare-kick-snare pattern, but filled it with synthesizer pads and bass. This simplicity is not a weakness but a genre feature: the fewer elements in the rhythm section, the more room remains for melody and vocals.
Drums. In Hi-NRG drums hit hard and "in your face": LinnDrum or TR-808 with a bright snare and staccato hi-hat. In Italo Disco drums can be softer, with gated reverb and less aggression; Roland TR-707 or Simmons SDS-V were often used for a "plastic" sound. Synthesisers. Hi-NRG favours bright lead sounds and brass presets, Italo Disco prefers slow-attack pads, arpeggios and bell sounds. The same Roland Juno-60 will "shout" in Hi-NRG and "sing" in Italo Disco.
The synthesizer in this setup could play several roles at once: Juno-60 for pads and strings, TB-303 for squelching acid bass (later in acid house), DX7 for electric piano or bells. The sequencer decided when each instrument entered, and MIDI made sure everything stayed in time.
From analog to digital and back
In the 1990s hardware synthesizers and drum machines were partly replaced by samplers (Akai MPC, E-mu) and DAWs (Cubase, Logic, Pro Tools). Producers began programming drums on screen rather than on an 808 panel. But the sound of the 808 and 909 remained in demand, and in the 2000s an analog revival began: Behringer, Arturia, Korg and Novation released clones of classic machines.
Today software emulations - Roland Cloud, Arturia V Collection, Native Instruments Maschine - let anyone get the 808/909 sound without hardware. But many producers still return to the originals for the tactile feel and "living" behaviour of analog circuits.
Modern workflow in a DAW
Modern sequencers - Ableton Live, Logic Pro, FL Studio, Cubase - repeat the 1980s logic in a virtual environment. Instead of physical MIDI cables there are MIDI tracks; instead of a hardware drum machine there is a plugin or sampler; instead of an analog synthesizer there is a virtual instrument. The main advantage of a DAW is unlimited tracks, quick editing and saved versions. The risk is perfectionism: endless tweaking of details instead of live performance.
In a DAW producers often combine virtual and real instruments: the MIDI rhythm is written with a TR-808 plugin, while bass and pads may come from a real Juno or Prophet. This hybrid approach keeps the "spirit" of analog sound while keeping digital flexibility. Practical example: building an Italo Disco track
Imagine a minimal setup: Roland TR-808 as master clock, Roland Juno-60 for pads, Yamaha DX7 for bass, Roland VP-330 for vocoder backing. The process:
- Program a pattern on the 808: kick on every beat, snare on 2 and 4, open hi-hat on offbeats.
- Set the Juno-60 to a pad of string-like or choir-like sound.
- Record a DX7 bass part in eighth notes, root to fifth.
- Add vocoder chords from the VP-330 for a "spacey" effect.
- Mix everything on a mixer, adding reverb and a little delay.
In 1983 such a track could have played in a European discothèque alongside Kano or Cyber People. Today the same combination can be built in a DAW with plugins, but the logic is unchanged: the drum machine is the skeleton, the synthesizers are the flesh, and the sequencer is the nervous system.
