What is a matrix number
The matrix number is a sequence of characters etched or stamped into the runout zone of a vinyl disc. It is applied during the master disc manufacturing stage: the cutting engineer cuts the lacquer disc, and the cutting stylus simultaneously engraves the identifier, which then transfers to every subsequent stage - the mother, the stamper, the finished record.
The matrix number typically includes three elements:
- The label's catalog number - matches the number on the label (for example, ZYX 5516, DM 8001)
- Side identifier - A or B (or 1/2), indicating the side of the record
- Stamper generation - the digit after the side letter (A1 = first stamper, A2 = second)
For example, the matrix etching "DM 8001-A1" on a Discomagic Records release means: catalog number DM 8001, side A, first stamper from the first matrix disc. The higher the digit after the side letter, the more copies were pressed - and the more likely stamper wear, which produces surface noise and high-frequency loss.

The stamper: how a metal master becomes a record
Vinyl manufacturing begins with a lacquer disc - an aluminium plate coated with soft lacquer. The cutting engineer cuts grooves into it with a cutting stylus. This lacquer disc goes to the factory, where a metal matrix disc (mother) is made by electroplating. Several stampers - negative metal copies - are then pulled from the matrix disc and installed in the press, where they stamp grooves into the vinyl mass.
Each stamper is rated for a certain number of pressings - typically 500-1000 copies, after which the quality of the pressed vinyl begins to deteriorate. Identifying the pressing plant
The pressing plant is a key parameter for determining a disc's country of origin. Different plants had different identification systems in the runout zone:

Determining the country of pressing
The country of pressing is not always the country of the label. Italo-disco records could be released in Italy, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, and Japan, and each pressing had its own differences. Four sources are used to determine the country:
- The label - design, fonts, distribution codes (for example, "Made in Germany" on ZYX German releases)
- Matrix etchings - number format and additional plant codes
- Catalog number - the same release could have different numbers in different countries (Italian DM 8001 and German ZYX 5516 - different editions of the same track)
- The cover - artwork often differed between countries: different fonts, colour schemes, sometimes additional texts in the pressing country's language
For Italian labels of the 80s, a common situation was that the same record came out in Italy on the original label and in Germany under licence on a different label with a different catalog number. Releases by Discomagic Records in Italy had DM-series numbers, while German licensed editions had ZYX-series numbers or those of other German labels. Both copies contain the same track, but the matrix etchings are different because they were pressed at different plants.
Stamped vs handwritten etchings
Not everything in the runout zone is the same. Part of the information is stamped: it transfers from the lacquer disc to the matrix and then to every record. This is the catalog number, side, stamper generation - machine-readable information, identical on all copies in a batch. The other part is handwritten: scratched by hand with the cutting stylus on the lacquer disc. This includes the engineer's initials, mix version notes, sometimes a date. Handwritten etchings are unique - they can differ even on copies from the same batch if the engineer made different marks when cutting different lacquers.
For a collector, this means that two copies of the same release with the same catalog number can have different handwritten etchings - and therefore have been cut in different sessions. In practice: reading an italo-disco single's matrix
Imagine a 12-inch maxi-single on an Italian label. The label shows catalog number DM 8001. In the runout zone of side A we read: "DM 8001 A1" - stamped text, catalog number, side A, first stamper. If the same track was released in Germany under licence, the German copy's runout zone will show a different catalog number (for example, ZYX 5516), possibly a pressing plant code, and different engineer initials if the cut was done at a German studio. When the matrix disagrees with the label
Sometimes the matrix number in the runout zone does not match the catalog number on the label. The reasons vary: the plant used an internal numbering system, the label changed the number at the last moment, or the record was reissued with a new label on an old stamper. In such cases, the matrix is a more reliable source of information than the label. On Discogs, such discrepancies are often noted in the "Notes" field.
For a collector buying records on the secondary market, the ability to read the matrix is not an academic exercise. It is a way to distinguish an original from a reissue, an Italian pressing from a German licence, a first stamper from a fifth. The price of italo-disco singles on the secondary market depends on these details: two copies that look identical can differ in price severalfold if one is an original Italian first-stamper pressing and the other is a German third-generation reissue. Italian pressing plants of the 80s
Italian labels of the 80s - Discomagic, Memory Records, Time Records, Baby Records - worked with several pressing plants within Italy. Identifying a specific plant from the matrix is not straightforward, because the Italian system was less standardised than the British or German one. Often the only way to determine the plant is to cross-reference the matrix etchings with Discogs data, where users record the runout zones of specific releases.
Some Italian labels had their own pressing facilities. Discomagic Records, for example, built a vertically integrated model: from studio to press to distribution. This meant that matrix etchings on Discomagic releases often had a standard DM-series format - without additional plant codes, because the plant and the label were part of the same structure.
Sound and stamper: why the matrix affects quality
Stamper wear is not a theory but an acoustic fact. Each stamper is a metal form with microscopic grooves that are stamped into the vinyl mass under pressure. With each pressing, the metal deforms slightly: groove walls lose sharpness, the bottom becomes rougher. On the first 200-300 copies this is imperceptible; by the 800th - the high-frequency range compresses, the surface becomes noisier, quiet passages disappear into hiss.
This is why an A1 matrix commands value on the secondary market. It means the record was pressed with the first stamper from the first matrix disc, when the metal was still fresh. A2 - the second stamper, slightly worse sound. A3 and beyond - for collectors who want the release but do not claim reference sound. The price difference between A1 and A3 can be twofold.
How Discogs helps read the matrix
Discogs is the primary tool for verifying matrix etchings. Each database entry contains a "Barcode and Other Identifiers" field where users enter matrix numbers from the runout zone. If you hold a record and are unsure whether it is an original or a reissue - search the label's catalog number, filter by pressing country, and cross-reference the matrix. Reissues often have the same catalog numbers on labels but different matrix etchings: a different plant code, a different stamper generation, sometimes a different side format with "RE" (reissue).
The matrix is a silent witness. The label can be reprinted, the cover replaced, the catalog number changed. But the etching in the runout zone transfers from the lacquer disc through metal to vinyl, and it cannot be forged without access to factory equipment.
