Charts & lists
October 1983: the Italian project China Town releases a cover of Kim Carnes's “Bette Davis Eyes” - on the Crash label, catalogue number DS 005. Forty years later, that same track ends up in a playlist next to a cover recorded in 2024 on a home studio running Logic Pro 11. The loudness gap between them can reach 8 decibels.
Techniques
In 1988 the Central Television editorial board refused Mikhail Boyarsky a slot in the all-Union “Song of the Year 1988” festival with his version of “Zelenoglazoe Taxi” - with the wording “very mournful, inexpressive, sleep-inducing”. A version with that verdict nonetheless attached itself to the song in mass perception, while the author's version, by composer Oleg Kvasha, stayed in the shade.
Eurodance
Three hours, six blocks, forty tracks. A 90s disco for a corporate party does not work as a random playlist - it works as a programme with a rising arc: warm-up → dancing → peak → cool-down. Below is the evening's structure by blocks with timing, specific tracks and the logic of transitions. Tempos sit in the Eurodance range of 110-150 BPM (per the Russian Wikipedia article on Eurodance); durations are from Deezer.
Producers
1988, Saratov. Former OBKhSS officer Alexander Shishinin and composer Vitaliy Okorokov assemble a female group called Kombinaciya - inspired by a Mirage concert. A year later "Russian Girls" will sound across the country, and by 1992 "Dva kusocheka kolbaski" ("Two Little Slices of Sausage") will become a signature of the Russian 90s disco.
